SmartLipo™

SmartLipo™ Description

Smartlipo™ - Laser Liposuction Laser Body Sculpting
The Smartlipo™ is the first laser system designed for LaserBodySculpting™ and for the disruption of fat cells. It is ideal for treating localized deposits of unwanted fat, fat tissue irregularities & for coagulating tissue leading to a tightening effect. Smartlipo™ is ideal for treating small areas of the face, neck, arms, male breasts (gynecomastia), "bra fat," "love handles," saddle bags," inner and outer thighs, knees and other areas of loose or lax skin (flabby skin).

Dr. Bassin is one of the first plastic surgeons in Central Florida to offer SmartLipo™ See My Fox Orlando Video.

What are the benefits of Smartlipo™?
• Treats unwanted fat and fat tissue irregularities
• Promotes tissue coagulation resulting in skin tissue tightening
• Treats flabby or lax skin and areas of high vascularity
• Minimal edema and bleeding due to the laser’s hemostatic properties
• Minimal bruising
• Causes less trauma and faster healing time than traditional liposuction

What type of system is used?
The Smartlipo™ is an Nd:YAG laser with high peak power and a high rep rate of 40 Hz. The laser energy is delivered using a 300 micron fiber which is threaded through the handpiece and cannula.

Does laser-assisted lipolysis produce lasting results?
Yes! The Smartlipo™ procedure permanently destroys the treated fat cells. Adults do not create new fat cells. When a person gains weight, that person’s fat cells simply expand.  Should you gain weight, that fat will most likely be deposited in areas where the procedure was not performed.

Does this procedure have FDA clearance?
The Smartlipo™ has been cleared by the FDA for laser-assisted lipolysis. It is also cleared for incision, vaporization, ablation and coagulation of soft tissue.

Who is a good candidate for the procedure?
Ideal candidates are in good health, close to normal body weight and have realistic expectations for the results. If the person has areas of fat that will not respond to diet and exercise, then that person is a candidate for laser-assisted lipolysis.

How many treatments are required?
For most patients, typically only one treatment is required. The session may last from 45 minutes to one hour for each area treated. Laserlipolysis is also an ideal choice for “touch ups” and revisions.

THE SMARTLIPO™ DIFFERENCE
SMARTLIPO™
TRADITIONAL LIPOSUCTION
Very small incision, almost no scarring, no stiches required. Scarring occurs where cannula enters body, stiches usually required.
Promotes tissue tightening in areas where fat has been removed. Skin remains lax ,often leaves sagging skin where fat has been removed.
Minimal swelling, bruising or bleeding in treated area. (1mm-tube to melt fat away with laser) Swelling, bruising & bleeding often occurs in area treated.( 4-6 mm tube use to suck fat away)
Patient may return to work after two days recovery period. Patient May return to work after a week recovery period.
SMARTLIPO™ IS MUCH MORE COST EFFECTIVE

SmartLipo™ Procedure

Smartlipo™ laserlipolysis is a minimally invasive surgical procedure. The procedure disrupts the fat cells through a thermal and photodisruptive action – heating and shattering the fat cell membrane. The laser coagulates the underlying vessels due to the hemostatic properties of the laser, resulting in less bleeding, bruising, trauma as well as less down time. As an added benefit, the system has also been reported to promote tissue tightening through bulk thermal heating and tissue coagulation.

The procedure is commonly performed under local and tumescent anesthesia. A laser fiber is introduced through a handpiece and detachable cannula.  The cannula is then inserted through a 1 to 2 mm incision in the skin and into fat pockets. The cannula, with the tip of the fiber exposed approximately 2 mm, is then moved in a “back and forth” fanning motion. The laser’s aiming beam can be visualized through the skin, allowing the physician to identify the treatment area. As the fiber tip comes in contact with the fat cells it ruptures the cell membranes and releases the fatty oil from the fat cells. This end product may then be aspirated from the site.

Body-jet

The Body-jet is a revolutionary liposuction aspiration unit that has completely revolutionized the fat removal process. By using a high-powered water jet to flush out intact fat cells, this novel approach results in a gentler liposuction treatment performed on patients without the need for general anesthesia.  Recovery is minimal, trauma to nerves and blood vessels is virtually eliminated, and the septal attachments between the deeper structures and the skin are preserved, which aids in a more naturally tightened and contoured result. The most exciting aspect of the Body-jet is the ability to remove viable, intact fat cells, which can be immediately used for fat transfer and fat injection. The recovery of fat from liposuction patients, has until now, been a laborious process, involving centrifuges and prolonged time to ‘process’ the fat before use for fat injections.

The Body-jet, which can be described as a power washer for the fat, uses a high-powered fluid jet to navigate through the internal tissue, a process which until now, required manual force from the surgeon. The fluid jet‘s action also limits the trauma to the non-involved areas (skin, muscle, septal attachments), which until now, has always suffered trauma due to the manual force requirements of the traditional style cannulas. This novel process allows the surgeon to use approximately 10% of the energy typically required for fat removal, which is much gentler and less traumatic for the patient. This will invariably lead to a greatly reduced recovery time and an almost non-existent complication level.

Liposuction is typically a 2 step process. The first step is the infiltration, or numbing, in which tumescent solution, or numbing fluid, is delivered into the fat pocket where treatment is to be performed. The second step is the fat removal portion of the procedure. The recent advances in liposuction, most namely the fat-melting laser, or Smartlipo, has allowed surgeons to melt the fat and put laser energy into the skin to allow for a much simpler fat removal and tighter skin results. These fat-melting lasers still do not replace the need to have the melted fat aspirated, or suctioned out. The typical process, either through PAL, straight suction, or any other ‘older’ technology, is still traumatizing to the patient, and often times can lead to bleeding, nerve damage, lumps, bumps, divots, and almost all of the time, rupture of the septal attachments. These older techniques are commonly known to the lay public through popular media exposure, and exhibit the aggressive back and forth motion required by the surgeon to obtain complete fat removal. It is this 2nd step where the Body-jet will find its place.

The Body-jet allows the suction cannula to freely move within the fat compartment without causing trauma to the fat or any of the surrounding structures. This is accomplished by the high-powered jet stream that flushes out the fat cells after they have been loosened up by the water stream. The water stream also allows the cannula to advance through the entire fat compartment by gently separating the tissue without traumatizing it. The surgeon’s motion is similar to that of gently playing the violin and is much less taxing and fatiguing in comparison to the previously stated techniques.
